What is an Independent Medical Examination (IME)?

Independent Medical ExaminationAn Independent Medical Examination (“IME”)  involves a medical evaluation by a third-party medical or therapeutic professional of a claimant or plaintiff.  A typical IME consists of a medical record review and a physical examination.  The IME will result in an report where the examiner renders opinions regarding a number of pivotal issues in a dispute.  These issues most commonly include:

  • Causation (whether the injuries or conditions were caused by the accident in question);
  • Reasonableness of medical or therapeutic treatment (whether the amount and expense of medical or therapeutic treatment has been reasonable);
  • Necessity of medical or therapeutic treatment (whether the medical and therapeutic treatment was necessary for the given injury or condition); and
  • Disability ratings (whether a disability existed or exists, and to what extent).

If you have been scheduled for an IME, you should consult with an attorney immediately.  Contact one of our attorneys today to set up a free consultation.  Our attorneys will work diligently for you to provide the experienced representation you deserve.
